Welcome to Confessions of a Recovering Desperate Housewife

This is where raw honesty meets transformation—a space where I take off the mask, get real, and share the truths most people are too scared to talk about.

Through unfiltered stories of childhood trauma, narcissistic abuse, and the journey from an unappreciated housewife to a thriving single mom, I shine a light on the messy, often painful, but ultimately beautiful process of healing and growth.

This is a space to embrace the chaos, reclaim your power, and rise stronger—because nobody’s coming to save us, but we can always save ourselves.

If you’ve ever felt trapped by the roles you play or struggled to reclaim yourself after a life-changing event, this is your space. This newsletter dives into the good, the bad, and the ugly sides of life—family, relationships, personal growth, and everything in between. It’s about facing the shadows, detaching from the chaos, and discovering humanity in it all.

About Me

I’m Jennifer Sterling—a writer, life coach, recovering desperate housewife, and self-proclaimed truth-teller navigating the beautiful and messy journey of life. My story is one of survival, resilience, and transformation, shaped by both pain and growth.

I grew up in a world defined by chaos and instability. My childhood was marked by alcoholic, divorced parents, sexual abuse, time in foster care, and living in a girls’ group home. By my teens, I carried emotional scars that would take decades to heal.

In early adulthood, I married my high school sweetheart and moved across the country, leaving Chicago for Florida to start fresh. On the outside, I was a wife and stay-at-home mom of three, “living the dream” of constant busyness. But on the inside, I felt small, unseen, and devalued. My marriage became a source of toxic emotional abuse, and I lost myself in the role of “just” a mom, struggling to meet impossible expectations.

For years, I battled mental health struggles, self-medicating to cope with social anxiety and depression. Misdiagnosed with bipolar disorder, I spent years on medications that left me feeling detached from life. It wasn’t until later that I discovered the true root of my struggles: C-PTSD, the result of unresolved trauma and years of psychological abuse.

My divorce after 27 years was devastating but ultimately became the catalyst for rebuilding my life. As a single mom co-parenting with a toxic ex, I faced challenges that pushed me to my limits but also forced me to grow in ways I never imagined.

Since then, I’ve helped one child leave the nest, gained a granddaughter, and welcomed a daughter-in-law into my family—all while continuing to evolve into the best version of myself.

Personal development has been my lifeline. I’ve immersed myself in Tony Robbins seminars, studied emotional intelligence, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and attachment theory, and earned coaching certifications that deepened my mission. Writing became therapy and my purpose, turning pain into power and helping others do the same.

This newsletter is where I share unfiltered truths, practical tools, and raw stories to inspire connection and growth. Whether you’re here to reflect, grow, or simply feel seen, this is your space to rise stronger and embrace life’s messy beauty.

DISCLAIMER: This Substack contains my very real experiences, opinions, and memories—all told from my perspective, because it’s my life and I’m the one living it. Some names and identifying details have been changed to protect the privacy of individuals (and, let’s be honest, to spare the fragile egos of a few who don’t want their behavior exposed).

All of these stories are true…except for the parts that aren’t.

So, grab a drink, settle in, and enjoy the ride. Life’s too messy to not laugh about it.
